2014 De Jong Lecture by Wendy Manning

Well-being in Same-Sex Relationships

Recently, major shifts in the legal and social context surrounding same-sex relationships have occurred. The social acceptance and support for same-sex couples has skyrocketed such that the majority of Americans support same-sex marriage, and the legal system has been transformed with over 60% of the population living in states with same-sex marriage. While these changes have been rapidly underway there has been growing scholarly attention to the well-being of children and adults in same-sex parent families. This presentation will review recent research on child and adult well-being as well as include new findings related to the relationship stability of same-sex couples. Concluding comments will focus on challenges and opportunities for new research on same-sex relationships in the United States.
