Professional Bio

Julia Dillavou (pronouns: She/Her) is a graduate student in the Department of Criminology at Penn State University.

My research interests include incarceration and reentry, intersectional and feminist criminology, and policy. I am particularly interested in utilizing intersectional and critical perspectives in quantitative criminology.

My dissertation examines race- and gender-related disparities in pre-trial detention, specifically looking at how pre-trial experiences result from the accumulation of other disadvantages.

I received my M.A in Criminology from Penn State and my B.A in Sociology from the University of Vermont.  During my undergraduate studies, I assisted in survey data collection and analysis for the Vermont Department of Corrections, interviewing individuals incarcerated in Vermont Prisons in 2014. I also conducted a qualitative study aimed at understanding how the criminal justice system supported and handled incarcerated parents.

Prior to my arrival at Penn State, I served as an AmeriCorps VISTA member with The DREAM Program and later as a Program Services Administrator for the State of Vermont, Department of Vermont Health Access. I also spent several years implementing recreational programming for the women residing in the Chittenden County Regional Correctional Facility.
