Kendal Lowrey is a PhD Candidate in Sociology and Demography at the Penn State University. Her research is broadly focused on immigrants and their integration into U.S. society. In some of her recent research, she has focused on the intergenerational mobility and well-being of immigrants through observing indicators of socioeconomic status and health (e.g., education, earnings, functional limitations). She is also concerned with the impacts of immigration policy on immigrants. For instance, she has investigated the likely impacts of the late Public Charge Rule on immigrant national origin groups. This ruling altered the criteria for immigrant admissions based on new criteria that predicted an immigrant’s likelihood of becoming a public charge. Another aspect of her research is centered on working with data initiatives to improve the information available regarding immigrants, their mobility, and their migration patterns. She has utilized innovative methods using U.S. Census data to link individual records across census surveys to obtain family generations of data.
Kendal is a previous NIH-T32 Predoctoral Trainee and Chief Evaluation Office Summer Fellow with the U.S. Department of Labor. She is the recipient of the Sociology Graduate Program Alan Booth Award for Outstanding Graduate Student for the 2022-2023 academic year and was awarded the Best Master’s Thesis Award in Sociology in 2021. Her research has been supported by several university programs such as the College of the Liberal Arts, the Population Research Institute, the Department of Demography, and the Department of Sociology and Criminology. She graduated from the University of Missouri in 2018 with a master’s degree in public policy and from Webster University with a degree in business administration.
