Outstanding alumni and undergraduate students were honored at the 2016 Department of Sociology and Criminology Award Ceremony on April 8 at the Nittany Lion Inn.
Alumni Awards
Kevin Deasy (Social Welfare ’76) received the 2016 Outstanding Alumni Award, and Cpl. Bryon K. Dickson II (Administration of Justice ’03) posthumously received the 2016 Outstanding Young Alumni Award

Student Awards
Student Marshals were selected from each major to represent all graduating seniors in that major during commencement. Megan Wisniewski was selected to serve as the 2016 Sociology Student Marshal, and Michael Banerjee was selected to serve as the 2016 Criminology Student Marshal. In addition Sociology Marshal nominees included Jael Charles, Catherine Clause, Kristen Laubscher, Gretchen Perhamus, Kaitlin Shartle, and Rachel Yee. Criminology Marshal nominees included Jael Charles, Catherine Clause, Ryan Ivins and Nicole Solano.
Distinguished Graduating Senior Awards were presented to a Sociology major and a Criminology major who had a grade point average of 3.75 or above and a strong record of accomplishments outside the classroom—including activities such as education abroad, internships, working as a teaching or research assistant, and volunteer and community service. Jael Charles was the recipient of the Sociology Award, and Nicole Solano was the recipient of the Criminology Award.
Harrison Collins, a junior criminology major from Severna Park, Maryland, was the inaugural recipient of the Trooper Dickson Memorial Scholarship. The Trooper Dickson Scholarship award was established by the Penn State Department of Sociology and Criminology Board of Visitors in 2015 to honor the memory of Pennsylvania State Trooper Bryon Dickson.
