Abdul Basit Adeel’s paper on ongoing lynchings in India has received Elise Boulding Student Paper Award from the American Sociological Association (ASA) in the Public Sociology and Sociological Practice, and Peace, War and Social Conflict Section. The same paper had previously received Robert F. Dentler Student Practitioner Award from Public Sociology and Sociological Practice Section.

Dave Baker traveled to Gwangju, South Korea, in late June to attend a conference hosted by the Korea Education Research Association at Chonnam National University. There, he gave the invited key-note address, “Falling Birthrates, Spreading Shadow Education, and Globalizing Science Production: What Do World Trends Mean for the Future of Korean Education?”

Sarah Damaske was featured in an article in the Atlantic, titled, "Retirement Gets Harder the Longer You Wait" by Charley Locke on July 23, 2024.

Rich Felson completed 25 years of service to the University on August 15th. During his time at Penn State, Rich has made a wide variety of contributions to the department and has proven to be an incredibly decorated and impactful scholar. For example, Rich's work has been cited nearly 20,000 times and he was named as a Fellow by the American Society of Criminology for his research accomplishments. Thank you, Rich, for all that you have done and congratulations on this career milestone!

Jessica Ho was quoted in an article Newsweek.

Kayla Kemp received a Doctoral Dissertation Research Improvement Grant from the American Sociological Association (ASA). She has been using this grant primarily to interview private school administrators throughout the Southern U.S Kayla is also starting a tenure-track position at Union University, a small liberal arts college in Jackson, TN, beginning on August 12, 2024. She will be a Visiting Assistant Professor for now, with anticipated promotion to Assistant Professor after she graduates with her Ph.D. in AY24-25.

Cayley Ryan-Claytor and Ashton Verdery had an article on the prevalence of losing a family member to drug overdoses among U.S. children under 18 accepted for publication in the American Journal of Public Health.

Esmeralda Sánchez Salazar’s article, "Comparing Confidence in Institutions Among Latino and White Catholics and Evangelicals: Exploring Religious Differences" with colleagues, Esther Chan and Sharan Kaur Mehta, was accepted at Social Problems. Additionally, she was selected for Harvard's new Faculty of Arts and Sciences Research and Academic Exchange and will be visiting Harvard this fall, Oct. 28 - Nov. 1.

Stacy Silver completed 25 years of service to the University on August 15th. During her time at Penn State, Stacy has made a tremendous number of contributions to the department. For example, she served as the Sociology & Criminology Honor's Advisor for 11 years and she has received the Outstanding Faculty Advisor Award for the College of the Liberal Arts. Thank you, Stacy, for all that you have done and congratulations on this career milestone!

Julia Szabo defended her dissertation "Finding La Raza in the Suburbs: Race, Place, and Schooling in a Latino-majority Suburb" this summer - and moved to State College. She joins our tenure track faculty as Assistant Professor of Sociology and Latino/a Studies.
