Abdul Basit Adeel received the Robert F. Dentler Student Practitioner Award from the American Sociological Association (ASA) in the Public Sociology and Sociological Practice section for his ongoing work on lynchings in India.

Also, Adeel and Dr. Yubai Yuan, assistant professor of statistics, are Co-PIs on a C-SoDA Accelerator Award Seed Grant for studying invisible influence over social networks.

Anthony Albanese received the Best Graduate Student Paper Award from the American Sociological Association (ASA) in the History of Sociology and Social Thought section. Anthony also won the 2024 Alan Booth Award for Outstanding Graduate Student Work in Sociology.

Ibrahim “Enes” Atac won the 2024 Huber-Form Sociology Master Thesis Award for his thesis “Varieties of Group Threat: Ethnic Group Position, Individual-Level Status, and Anti-Immigrant Sentiments.” Enes also won first place for his working paper “Religious Rebound, Political Backlash, and the Youngest Cohort: Understanding Religious Change in Turkey” inthe Sociology Graduate Student Paper Competition.

Sarah Damaske was featured on NPR's Marketplace on May 15 in a story by Kristin Schwab about how "A greater percentage of women are working than ever before."

Kira England won first place for her published paper “Shifting Cohort Patterns in the Use of Drugs with Elevated Overdose Risk in the United States” in the Sociology Graduate Student Paper Competition.

Corina Graif was the recipient of the Department of Sociology and Criminology’s 2024 inaugural Graduate Student Mentoring Award.

Carlos Gonzales won the 2024 Outstanding Master’s Thesis Award in Criminology for his thesis “The Fear of Identity Motivated Crime: An ‘Identity-In-Community Context’ Vulnerability Perspective.”

Sheridamae Gudez was named one of the Population Association of America (PAA) Best Poster Winners at the latest conference in Columbus, Ohio. Sheri presented a soon-to-be-published study with Dr. David Ramey titled “No Pencils, No Books: An Examination of COVID-19 School Closures and Neighborhood Crime.”

Sarah Henry Davis’s poster “Judge Demographics and Their Impact on Sentencing of Drug Crimes: Using PA Commission of Sentencing Data to Examine Drug Sentencing Severity” with Drs. Abeena Jones and Megan Kurlychek won the Best Poster award for the Consortium on Substance Use and Addiction (CSUA) conference. Sarah will receive a plaque and be highlighted on the CSUA website.

Steven Haas was notified he will be promoted to Professor of Sociology and Demography starting July 1, 2024.

Molly Martin was notified she will be promoted to Professor of Sociology and Demography starting July 1, 2024.

Siyang Ni received an honorable mention for his working paper “Revisiting Self-Control Theory: A Longitudinal Analysis Using the UK Millennium Cohort Study” in the Criminology Graduate Student Paper Competition.

Elena Pojman and Jason Park received honorable mentions for their working paper “Domestic Labor and Care Work Outsourcing Differences between Same-Sex and Different-Sex Couples” in the Sociology Graduate Student Paper Competition.

Joseph Risi won first place for his working paper “Community Representation and Policing: Effects on Black Civilians” in the Criminology Graduate Student Paper Competition.

Jessie Slepicka won first place for his published paper “Environmental Hazards and Structural Covariates of US Homicide Rates: Methodological Considerations When Investigating the ‘Ecology’ of Violence” in the Criminology Graduate Student Paper Competition.

Ashton Verdery, Penn State sociology program graduate Lauren Newmyer, PRI postdoc Mara Sheftel, and coauthors won a poster award at the annual meeting of the Population Association of America (PAA) in Columbus, Ohio, for their paper "Older Adults’ Descendants and Family Networks in the Context of Global Educational Expansion." Additionally, Ashton, HHD assistant professor Alexis Santos Lozada, and PRI postdoc Mara Sheftel won a poster award at PAA for their paper "Typologies of Aging: U.S. Drivers of Population Aging at the Local Level." Ashton was selected as a deputy editor of the journal Demography for 2024-2027.Ashton was notified he will be promoted to Professor of Sociology, Demography, and Social Data Analytics starting July 1, 2024.

Bianca Wirth won the 2024 Outstanding Graduate Student Work in Criminology. Bianca also received an honorable mention for her published paper “From an Election to an Insurrection: Investigating Differential Engagement and Sentiment in the #DefundthePolice and #DefendthePolice Network on Twitter” in the Criminology Graduate Student Paper Competition.

Haoyang Zhang published a paper “Internal Migration: Understanding Parent–Child Differences in Educational Expectations with Dr. Jennifer Glick in Population Research and Policy Review.
