Professional Bio

Esmeralda Sánchez Salazar serves as a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Sociology and Criminology and a postdoctoral fellow affiliate of the Population Research Institute (PRI) at the Pennsylvania State University.

Research Interests

Her primary research explores the extent to which education and religious institutions exacerbate or ameliorate inequalities in higher education attainment and science stratification for marginalized racial, ethnic, and immigrant groups, specifically Latinos and English Learners. Her work has received funding from the National Science Foundation, the National Academies of SciencesEngineering and Medicine, the Ford Foundation, and The Sociology of Science and Religion Funding Initiative, among others. A first-generation college graduate and daughter of Mexican and Salvadorian immigrants, Esmeralda earned her Ph.D. in sociology at Rice University and holds a master’s degree from the University of Texas at Dallas and a bachelor’s degree from Southern Methodist University.
